PARENTS WANT SOBOKAZANE HIGH SCHOOL HEAD TEACHER OUT
NTFONJENI – Parents of pupils at Sobokazane High School want the head teacher out.
Sobokazane High School is one of the best-performing schools in the country. It was constructed through funding provided by the government of Japan. It is situated around Hhelehhele under Ntfonjeni Inkhundla. The head teacher, Faith Mohale, was recently appointed to the school and she has been there for about two months. Yesterday, about 100 parents attended a meeting after concerns that their children were acting strangely as they would often roll on the ground and start hallucinating. This is said to have been happening since last Wednesday.
Hallucination
They said during their state of hallucination, the children rolled on the ground and behaved strangely. Some allegedly hallucinated while others ran around, with one of the pupils jumping over a fence. The parents took turns complaining during the meeting, saying that they were not happy with the head teacher because she had not shown concern about the state of the children. They alleged that despite the children behaving in the way they did, the head teacher remained in the office and did not attend to them.
One of the parents, however, expressed concern that though they were not happy with the head teacher, she should at least be allowed to continue within the school until the end of the year. “If we ask her to leave now, this will disturb the learning process,” said the parent. A teacher, who was sitting in for the head teacher, also told the parents that they should remember that when the head teacher was away, it was difficult to run the school. She said this was because she was responsible for signing important documents and also authorising purchases. “If we run out of essential commodities, no one will sign and we will not be able to run the school without her,” said the teacher.
However, a majority of the parents continued to demand that the head teacher should leave the school by Friday. The Chairperson of the school committee, Pastor Lucky Ndlovu, told the parents that the head teacher was indisposed. This was after some parents demanded that she should have been part of the meeting. Ndlovu told the parents it would be wrong for the committee to fetch the head teacher if she had reported being ill. “It would be an offence and that is against labour laws,” said the chairperson. He then said since the parents appeared to have different views on what should be done, they can decide through a vote. Nearly all the parents decided that the head teacher should pack her belongings and leave the school premises.
