FEMALE COP SHOT 7 TIMES; IT’S NOT POLITICAL - FAMILY
NHLANGANO – The shot female police officer had seven gunshot wounds and some relatives believe the assassination had nothing to do with politics.
Tigezile Shongwe, nee Magongo (49), was shot and killed while returning home from work on Wednesday night. This incident happened around Extension 4 below His Majesty’s Correctional Services facility in Nhlangano. The reasons behind her assassination remain unconfirmed, though there are various theories among those who were close to her on why she was killed.
Premeditated
One version of the incident suggests that the shooting was related to the ongoing political unrest in the country that has seen a number of police officers being shot; another version is to the effect that this was a premeditated incident. This is so because according to the family, a case was reported to the police about a month ago after three men attempted to attack her when she got home from work. When this reporter visited the Magongo family yesterday, two women were found cleaning the car and ground, which had bloodstains.
In an interview with about seven family members, who all weighed in on the matter but wished to remain anonymous, they stated that they were devastated by the news of the incident. It was said that the incident was witnessed by the deceased’s firstborn, aged 22 years. It was said that upon arrival, the deceased alighted from the car to open the gate. As she made her way back to the car, she was shot. Suspicions are that she attempted to quickly enter her car but more shots were fired towards her and she fell.
After the shooting, the suspects are said to have fled the scene. Police were said to have been called to the scene. The Magongo family stated that they did not want to confirm or deny the allegations making the rounds on who was responsible for the shooting but only trusted that it was God’s Will.
They stated that they were only looking to God as they believed He saw everything and knew what was bound to happen. When asked what they thought might have been the reason behind the shooting, they said they did not wish to discuss it. They said the Shongwe family had already officially reported the matter though Mashumi Shongwe, the husband to the deceased, was said to be indisposed. “We were told he was sick and he could not come,” said one of the family members. They mentioned that they discussed funeral logistics, which they did not share in detail for now.
Mourners
Yesterday, mourners had already started arriving at the home where the incident happened and were attended to by the Magongo family.
Information sourced from reliable sources investigating the case was that a person of interest had been taken in for questioning by the police, but nothing had come out of it as yet. When sought for comment yesterday morning, Mashumi confirmed the death of his wife, without elaborating much on it. “Yes, it happened,” was all he said before ending the call.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the murder of a 49-year-old woman. She confirmed the incident through a press release issued yesterday morning. “On November 30, 2022, at 2010 hours (8:10pm), a 49-year-old woman was shot several times by two unknown men while at Extension 4 in Nhlangano,” said Vilakati. When asked about the allegations that a certain person of interest was taken in for questioning by the police on the night of the murder, Vilakati stated that she did not confirm or discuss details of an ongoing investigation.
