MANZINI – In a twist of events, Eswatini Kombis and Buses Allied Workers Union (EKABAWU) will convene a meeting today to decide on what will happen on December 13.

EKABAWU National Organiser Muzi Nhleko said this morning, representatives of all bus ranks would meet at the Manzini Bus Terminus. Nhleko said the president of his organisation, Mcolisi Fakudze, yesterday communicated with all bus ranks that they should meet today at the Manzini Bus Rank to decide on what would happen on December 13, 2022.

In an audio, which he circulated on various social media platforms and further confirmed to be the position of EKABAWU, Nhleko said the public should not be shocked by reports revolving around what would transpire on December 13, 2022.The aforementioned date is when the two incarcerated legislators would make their appearance in court. The pair of arrested politicians is Hosea Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza of Hosea and Ngwempisi MP Mthandeni Dube.

Last month, after boycotting work on November 15 and16, 2022, public transport workers on the latter date announced that they would resume duties the subsequent day, while emphasising that they were calling for the release of the MPs not later than December 2022.

Employed

He said at all bus ranks, emaSwati were the ones employed and what was aspired by the citizenry at large was what public transport workers also sought. Nhleko said if the public wanted the public transport sector to grind to a halt on the aforementioned date, they would heed their call. “What was observed is that in the past (November 15, 2022) was that there was no public transport to ferry passengers to the High Court resulting in every person struggling,” he said.

Nhleko said if the public called for the operations to duplicate what transpired on November 15, 2022, there would be no challenge in executing that. He said in getting the input of the public transport sector workers, they had planned that those who would not be in line to transport passengers should partake in the meeting in order to have a collective resolve.

He said the issue of the call for the release of the legislators was not only limited to bus rank marshalls, but involved every member of society. Nhleko said it was for this reason that they, as EKABAWU, had agreed that bus rank workers should speak for themselves on issues affecting their work.

His assertions are subsequent to a resolution which was taken in a meeting on Tuesday by Manzini Bus Rank marshalls under EKABAWU, wherein it was said that the Secretary General of Swaziland Transport Communication and Allied Workers Union (SWATCAWU), Sticks Nkambule, had used an umbrella statement when saying that they would not be operating on December 13, 2022.
