MBABANE – Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) Regional Customer Service Administrator Phinda Ndlangamandla was on Monday shot at, allegedly by soldiers, while travelling along the Siteki-Manzini Public Road.

Phinda, who is popularly known as SDK in social circles, is a brother to prominent lawyer, Noncedo Ndlangamandla. According to sources, Phinda was driving from Siteki to Manzini at around 6pm when he reportedly came across a roadblock. The insider narrated that suddenly, gunshots were fired at the white BMW sedan he was driving and one bullet penetrated the driver’s door and hit his right leg. The source said they had reasonable suspicion that Phinda was shot by one of the State security officers who were manning the roadblock. This would, however, be confirmed once police conclude their investigations. “Two shots were fired at the motor vehicle,” said the insider. The source further said that after being shot, Phinda drove to Manzini Clinic, where he was admitted. It has been reliably gathered that he had since been transferred to Mbabane Clinic, where the bullet will be removed from his body.

When his sister was called for comment, she confirmed the incident and further stated that the matter was now being handled by the police. EEC Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager Khaya Mavuso, said: “We have received a report of an EEC employee who was injured from a shooting incident on his return from work on Monday, late afternoon. He is receiving the necessary medical attention and is under observation. The matter was reported to the police.”

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati said the matter was reported to the police and they were currently investigating. Meanwhile, Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) Public Affairs Officer 2nd Lieutenant   Tengetile Khumalo said: “My office is in no possession of a vehicle check point (VCP) alleged incident report nor has the battalion in-charge of the operations forwarded such to my office.”

Meanwhile, in an almost similar incident, an MTN Eswatini employee, Kayise Qwabe was previously reported to have been shot allegedly by soldiers while on her way to her house after knocking-off late at work. She was allegedly shot by soldiers who were manning a roadblock at Mountain View. In another previous incident, on November 14, 2022, soldiers were reported to have allegedly shot a couple at Nkoyoyo. The two were shot three times each in their upper limbs.

: Electricity Tariff Revision
Should the EEC tariff hike be revised to fall within the inflation rate bracket?
