SHOT COPS’ LIVES OUT OF DANGER
MANZINI - The lives of the three police officers who were shot by unknown gunmen at Kwaluseni, Matsapha on Monday night, are out of danger.
Medical practitioners the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital, where the affected members of the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) were rushed to after the attack, managed to have a total of seven bullet fragments successfully removed from their bodies. The trio is based at the Matsapha Police Station. According to a source, the bullets were the type which explode after hitting the target. As such, he said the medical practitioners did not get a solid bullet, but they only removed fragments. “To substantiate that the law enforcers’ lives are no longer in danger, the trio is admitted to the male and female surgical wards - where all patients with surgical conditions are taken care of,” the source said.
Operation
He said mostly, they were shot in the upper part of their bodies, mainly around the thoracic cavity (chest). However, he highlighted that none of the police officers required an operation for the bullet fragments to be removed from their bodies. He said this meant that they were not lodged in critical parts of their bodies. It is worth noting that the three officers who are recovering in hospital are not the first ones to survive after being shot by unknown people. In June 2022, a male police officer who was driving a police van while patrolling with a female colleague around Manzini, survived after they were attacked by unknown gunmen. The shooting took place near Manzini Club traffic circle. The female law enforcer died on the spot after she was hit by about three bullets in the chest. On the other hand, the survivor was shot twice in the chest. Both officers were based at Manzini Police Station, under the Traffic Department. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati said the relevant bodies to comment about the situation of the officers in hospital were the Ministry of Health and their family members.
