TWO ARRESTED AFTER FAILED HIJACKING
MBABANE – A man was able to fight off five armed robbers who wanted to rob him off his vehicle, yesterday at The Gables in Ezulwini.
According to eyewitness, the man who was in the company of his wife had just parked his vehicle when two of the five men appeared on the driver’s window and pointed a gun at him. It is said that they ordered him out of the vehicle, but he resisted which resulted in the would be hijackers hitting him on the side of the head with the back of the gun. “He was pulled out of the car while his wife was told to remain inside the vehicle with the other man who boarded the back of the bakkie.
“However, the owner of the car could not be deterred as he regained his strength and began to fight off the two men while the other three stood from afar,” narrated the eyewitness. Another witness said the reason the driver was able to prevent the robbers from stealing his car was that they couldn’t start the engine.
“Blows were exchanged between the owner of the car and the robbers and he eventually won as we saw them running towards the direction of Mantenga Road,” said the source. As they ran along the roadside they were interceped by a Royal Eswatini Police Service Toyota Quantum, which had over 10 police officers on board.
The police according to a source, had already heard a tip off on the attempted car hijacking and immediately apprehended the two men while the three managed to flee.
A loaded firearm which was used in the attempted robbery by the suspects was recovered during the arrest.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer, Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the incident.
“Two men were arrested with a pistol loaded with 16 bullets near Mantenga yesterday and police are still investigating the matter,” said Vilakati. Furthermore, it was gathered that the suspects might have been trying to get a pick-up from a getaway car - a GP registration Ford Ranger that sped off at high speed right at the point they were arrested.
