40 ARRESTED ON CHRISTMAS WEEKEND

MANZINI - The police have arrested 40 people for various offences over the long weekend of Christmas.

This is according to police reports which cover between Saturday December 24, 2022 and Monday December 26, 2022. In the reports, the police said they arrested a total of 31 motorists for drink-driving over the Christmas weekend, while in the previous year, 23 people were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. This is a 25.8 per cent increase.

Murders

The law enforcers also arrested four people in connection with some of the murders which were committed over the Christmas weekend. In one instance, Pigg’s Peak police arrested a 25-year-old man of Mawombe for the murder of a 30-year-old man of Fontotje, who died after being stabbed with a sharp object once in the chest while at Buhleni. The incident happened in the early hours of Christmas Day – at around 1:45am. Again, the police arrested a 50-year-old man of Khalangilile in connection with a murder which happened on Christmas Day at Khalangilile at around 4pm, where a 50-year-old woman of the same area died after being stabbed with a sharp object three times in the chest and left breast.

Also, Pigg’s Peak police arrested and charged two men aged 34 and 22 of Mayangeni in connection with a murder case whereby, on Saturday December 24, 2022 at around 8am, a 24-year-old man of Nkonjane died after being stabbed several times all over the body while at Zibonele. On another note, on December 24, 2022 at around 12:30am, Mliba police arrested and charged a 30-year-old man of Siteki - Moyeni for being found in possession of a 0.22 rifle without a licence while at Nyonyane.

Arrested

Again, on Christmas day, at around 9am, police from Mliba Police Station arrested and charged two men aged 33 and 35 of Luve in connection with copper theft, whereby 400 metres of Eswatini Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (EPTC) copper cables valued at E60 000 were stolen at Luve. Moreover, the police also arrested and charged a 34-year-old man of Nhlanguyavuka with culpable homicide. This was after he lost control of his Toyota Alphard sedan and the vehicle overturned several times. Two passengers aged 21 and 25 from Nhlanguyavuka sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Mhlume Clinic and Mkhuzweni Health Centre, respectively, where they were certified dead upon arrival. All the suspects are expected to appear in court today.
