BOY (17) STABS, KILLS MUM, COPS FIRE SHOTS

MATJENI – A 17-year-old teenager on Wednesday evening allegedly brutally stabbed to death his mother with a knife in front of his brother, who was afraid to intervene.

The incident happened at Matjeni area, and according to Make Maziya, the mother to the deceased Lindiwe Maziya (44), her grandson first had a confrontation with his elder brother. The suspect is said to have then drawn a knife and attempted to stab him, but he managed to outpace him while calling for help. The elderly woman said the incident took place while she was inside the main house and the deceased was outside.

She narrated that she overheard her daughter trying to calm her son down after drawing the knife and advancing towards his sibling, but he heard none of it and returned aggressively and stabbed his mother. Make Maziya said her eldest grandson, who escaped the assailant, raised the alarm and neighbours responded to the call and found that Lindiwe was bleeding profusely from the stab wounds on the back of her neck and head. The elderly woman said her grandson acted as though he was possessed as he first had an altercation with his peers whom he worked with in a temporary job and she was told that he also wielded a knife at them but they managed to confiscate it and later gave it back to him.

“He drinks and smokes dagga and I suspect that after his altercation with his friends, he got engaged in his habits. He came home around 5pm and went to the house he shares with his brother and I overheard them arguing and his brother screaming while running out of the house. I then overheard his mother trying to calm him down, that was when he went straight for her, where she was seated and repeatedly stabbed her until she died on the spot,” she narrated. The elderly woman also lauded the police for their prompt response when called. The law enforcers managed to apprehend the suspect.

She added that the police had to fire several gunshots to stop her grandson from escaping. “I am still reeling from shock as to what prompted my grandson to act wild and in such a manner. I don’t want to see him again for (allegedly) killing my child,” said Make Maziya. Matjeni community police member Duma Shoulder said this shocking incident was the sixth to happen in the area in a space of a month. He said he also sustained an injury after being stabbed with a spear while trying to calm down a fight between two young men from the area.

“After sustaining that injury, I told community members that we will lose a person with the increasing number of criminal cases in the area. I told them that they should report any criminal activity to the police, so that we curb such unbecoming behaviour,” he said. Deputy Police Information and Communications Officer Inspector Nosipho Mnguni confirmed the matter. “Yes, we have a report of the matter where a 17-year-old teenager stabbed his mother to death. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident,” she said.
