3 PUPILS KILLED AFTER BEING KNOCKED DOWN BY ARMY CAR
NHLANGANO - Three pupils from KaKholwane Primary School died on the spot when they were knocked down by an army vehicle yesterday.
The accident happened at Mkhondvo in the Shiselweni Region, around 3pm. It was gathered from sources that the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser model, was being driven by a junior officer, and he was with a senior officer, who occupied the passenger’s seat. It was gathered that the pupils had just knocked off from school, headed home and were walking on the side of the road when the driver lost control of the vehicle which veered off the road and ran over three of the pupils.
Eyewitness
According to an eyewitness, the pupils were more than 30 on the side of the road and when the army vehicle veered off the road, the rest of the pupils ran into the road. “They had open wounds in the head,” said the eyewitness. In an interview with one of the families of the pupils, they requested not to comment as they were still coming to terms with the news. The pupils reportedly died on the spot and were estimated to be aged between seven and 12 years.
Dead
It was said that police were called to the scene and the three pupils were taken to a health facility, where they were certified dead upon arrival. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the accident, together with UEDF Public Affairs Officer 2nd Lieutenant Tengetile Khumalo. She said their vehicle lost control which resulted in the accident. According to Khumalo, the vehicle was headed towards the Nhlangano direction to their battalion. “We would like send our condolences to the affected families,” she said.
