MBABANE – South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa has wished emaSwati well on the upcoming elections.

Ramaphosa made this remarks during the State visit by President Hage Geingob of the Republic of Namibia to the Republic of South Africa yesterday.
Ramaphosa noted that, together with President Geingob, they discussed political, economic and security issues in the SADC region. “This includes developments in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Lesotho and Eswatini,” said Ramaphosa.

Elections

“We wish the people of Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Madagascar well as they prepare to hold elections this year,” he said. However, when making reference to Eswatini, the statement issued by the leaders made no mention of a pending dialogue in Eswatini. This is despite that during their recent visits to the country, they spoke about a dialogue to end the then heightened political unrest. The aforementioned countries, including Eswatini, will this year have their elections. In Eswatini, processes towards the elections have already began as currently, the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) is conducting the civic and voter education in the different communities around the country.

Peace

Geingob is the sitting Chaiperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, which is playing a central role in advancing peace and stability in the region. Ramaphosa said he had assured President Geingob that South Africa would continue, as part of the SADC collective and within available resources, to assist with regional initiatives such as the SADC Mission in Mozambique. He added that they also deliberated on continental and international issues of mutual concern, including the implementation of the African Union’s (UN) Agenda 2063. The two presidents also expressed their concern on the current situation in Sudan, the ongoing occupation of Western Sahara, the continued denial of the aspirations of the Palestinian people, and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
