NHLAMBENI – Shock has engulfed residents of Nhlambeni after the chairman of the inner council there was found bludgeoned to death.
The chairman, Gangane ‘Dudline’ Magagula (69) was found dead inside his one-room house in Nhlambeni. He is said to have been last seen on Tuesday. According to Sizwe Shongwe, who is the secretary of the inner council, they were expected to go to Hhohho umphakatsi. The Hhohho umphakatsi is under Nftonjeni Inkhundla, but also overseas some areas in Nhlambeni, which is under Timphisini Inkhundla. Shongwe said they were surprised that on Wednesday, Magagula, who is popularly known as Gangane, did not show up to attend the scheduled meeting. He said they went to his home to check on him but noticed that there was no response and proceeded to the meeting.

He said when he returned later in the day, he asked his wife if they had seen Magagula but her response was negative. It was gathered that Magagula’s phone had been ringing but that later on it was out of network. Shongwe said upon realising that he could not locate Magagula, he gathered about five others including the chairperson of the community police. He said when they went to the homestead, they noticed that the livestock had not been fed and it appeared the door was slightly open.
He said when they approached the door, they noticed what looked like small drops of blood. Shongwe said they then asked the community police member to enter the house and check the situation. He said the door was pushed further to open so that the community police member could enter.
However, when the community police member, who was also identified as Shongwe entered the house, he noticed Magagula’s body on the floor, with his head appearing to have been hit with a blunt object, as it had a gaping wound.
Shongwe, the inner council secretary said when the others saw the community police member leaving the house and raising the alarm, they sensed that he had bad news to share. “It was then we discovered that he was dead,” said Shongwe. He said the matter was then reported to the police, who arrived to record statements about the incident. It was gathered that Magagula lived alone in his house. The Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the alleged murder.
