MBABANE – Minister of Education and Training Lady Mabuza has dismissed the rumours on the postponement of schools opening.

The minister said learners were expected to be at school tomorrow, May 3, 2023. Confusion over the schools reopening emanated from social media, as some users noted that there was postponement. Mabuza clarified that schools would open tomorrow. She said the rumours of postponement were wrong and there was no reason for such. “All teachers and learners are expected to report for school.” However, the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) Secretary General (SG), Lot Vilakati, stated that if government had not delivered on her mandate to buy food for the feeding scheme and books, among other things, they would have to take another decision.

The SG said government claimed to have delivered food and books, which they could not verify for now until the schools reopened. He said members would be informed on what would transpire tomorrow on their next move.On Friday, SNAT was supposed to convene an extra-ordinary general meeting, which did not take place as they failed to form a quorum. Issues that were to be discussed included the death threats directed to the President, Mbongwa Dlamini, hiring of contract teachers on a permanent basis, school feeding and distribution of books at primary level. Vilakati said if the meeting had continued with the agenda on the table, they could have taken a decision based on that.
