KALANGA WIDOWS WILL REGISTER - INDVUNA

KALANGA – KaLanga Umphakatsi will allow widows to register during the voter registration exercise after getting guidance from the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC).

The royal kraal’s Indvuna, Ceasar Mavuso, said the chiefdom had means to provide services to widows who wanted services at the umphakatsi. The indvuna made this assertion when responding to questions on whether the royal kraal would allow widows to register during the voter registration exercise that started yesterday.

Allowed

According to the traditions and customs, a widow in mourning gowns is not allowed to mingle and be in the midst of people. Yesterday, at the KaLanga Chiefdom, the EBC officials launched the voter registration with over 3 000 electorate in attendance. The registration of the electorate was delayed and started at around 9am. At around 3:30pm, KaLanga Chief Jozane Maziya registered after being announced by EBC deputy chairperson, marking the official launching of the voter registration for the national general elections. The indvuna stated that as a chiefdom, they had an obligation to look after the welfare of the disadvantaged as well as people with disabilities, hence widows were a priority.

Accommodated

Mavuso mentioned that they would engage the commission on how best widows could be accommodated during the exercise and not be left out as they also had the responsibility to exercise their right to vote. He added that the royal kraal always attended to widows when they had come to seek services such as scholarship letters for their children. “We will ensure that they are not left out, but the commission will guide us on how we accommodate them in ensuring that they exercise their right to vote,” he said.
