MBABANE – From working as a Studio Engineer, setting up equipment for smooth running of live television, 21 years later, Mlamuli Mtshengiswa Dlamini is the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Eswatini Television Authority (ESTVA).

ESTVA is a broadcaster that was established in 1983 through an Act of Parliament. It was officially opened by King Sobhuza II and was then called Swaziland Broadcasting Corporation. ESTVA also operates Eswatini TV and is 100 per owned by the government. The new CEO was introduced yesterday during a press briefing by the Principal Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology, Phesheya Dube. Mlamuli once worked for the same TV station in 2001, where he was a Studio Engineer.

Mlamuli, who had been based in the USA was appointed by the Minister of ICT Princess Sikhanyiso. Mlamuli’s appointment came after many other names had been mentioned in the media as possible CEOs for the much sought after position in the country’s television broadcaster.
Some of the names which are said to have been interviewed for the position were Nozipho Mamba, Zacharia Mthethwa, Mncedisi Mayisela, Phesheya Dube and Kenneth Maziya.

In 2022, Cabinet was reported to have recommended Andreas Dlamini as the CEO. Andreas was to replace the late Bongani Austin ‘S’gcokosiyancinca’ Dlamini, who retired on January 31, 2021.  Andreas had previously served as a board member. It was also reported that his name had been endorsed by the Ministry and that he would be the next CEO. Later in August 2022, it was reported that Andreas had been appointed as the Acting CEO.  This was after Maziya had acted in the position for over year.

Earlier in the same year, April 10, to be precise, the Times Sunday published an article titled, ‘Cabinet Committee Rejects Sikhanyiso’s ESTVA CEO’.
At the time, it was reported that the Ministry of ICT had requested the Standing Committee on Public Enterprise (SCOPE) to appoint a person who had not sat for the ESTVA CEO position interview. SCOPE had reportedly rejected the request by the  inister of ICT Princess Sikhanyiso. Mlamuli was reportedly not interviewed at the time by KQ Consultancy and SAMKO. In response, the ministry responded that Mlamuli was the only person who was qualified for the job, but that the board considered the minimum qualification for the job and sidelined him. Then PS Maxwell Masuku was quoted as saying that the recruitment process had not been fair.
