NOMINEE MADE TO APOLOGISE FOR SHOUTING; AMANDLA!
MBABANE - Indvuna Yenkhundla candidate had to apologise after shouting ‘Amandla’ when accepting his nomination.
This was during the 2023 General Elections nominations exercise held over the weekend. Simo Mamba was nominated for Indvuna Yenkhundla at Ngevini Royal Kraal, under Siphofaneni Constituency. After his registration status was verified by Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) clerks, he was asked by the presiding officer if he accepted the nomination. “Ngiyavuma kulingenela lukhetfo, Amandla,” he said, while raising a fist as he was responding to the presiding officer’s question. Amandla means power. The word is popular during political rallies and strikes. It was a popular rallying cry in the days of resistance against apartheid, used by the African National Congress (ANC) and its allies. Over the years, it became popular in political rallies and strikes.
After shouting ‘Amandla’, with his fist hoisted in the air, some people somehow cheered him while others expressed that they felt uncomfortable with this gesture. He was then recalled to apologise to the entire electorate, who were present during the nomination exercise. The presiding officer told him that it was disrespectful of him to utter such a statement, more especially in a royal kraal. Worth noting is that while the entire saga was unfolding, Chief Mshikashika Ngcamphalala was also seated just a couple of metres away from the residents, watching the entire nominations process.
