SIGHWE – “If Facebook likes were votes, I’d be Sigwe Member of Parliament (MP).”

These were the words of now-popular Member of Parliament (MP) loser candidate, Condom Dlamini (49). Dlamini was nominated at Nyatsini Umphakatsi, under Sigwe Inkhundla. His name, ‘Condom’ became a social media buzzword with some of the ‘netizens’ (citizens of the net) struggling to believe whether this was his real name or not. However, this publication caught up with Dlamini after he lost the elections at Sigwe Inkhundla. David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala, the former Minister of Tinkhundla Administration and Development won the elections.

He obtained the fourth position, getting 51 votes while the winner, Ngamphalala had 2 724. Dlamini said he was very confident he would win the elections and was confident of being the MP of Sigwe in the 12th Parliament. He also revealed that it was not the first time he had participated in the general elections. He said in 2013, he was nominated for the position of indvuna yenkhundla, where he obtained the second position.
When he was asked why he had accepted the MP nomination this time instead of the indvuna yenkhundla position, he said it was because he did not think anyone other than him deserved to win.

Projects

Dlamini said he believed he  was more involved in community activities than any other person within the constituency. He said he was involved in many community projects related to water and roads. Further, he said  in most of the projects, he was elected the chairperson. He blamed his reason for losing the election on  what he termed as being decampaigned by the public. This, he said they did by making fun of his name; Condom.
Dlamini said he was shocked that people made fun of his name and that they created memes out of his pictures. He said they associated him with condoms, and that in other images, his photo was edited to appear as though he was holding bottles of alcohol.
He said though he did not use social media or WhatsApp, he discovered that his images were being used wrong. Dlamini said he felt that some of the popular Facebook fan pages were being used to decampaign him. Dlamini said he could not respond to WhatsApp messages about himself because he does not use the messaging app.
He said he had never used WhatsApp in his life.
Also, Dlamini, who revealed that he is a fruit and vegetable vendor, did not go far academically. He said he only reached Form I, and that he is not well-versed in academic issues but was confident he could make a good MP.
Dlamini also lamented that he did not own a motor vehicle and that this made it difficult for him to travel from one chiefdom to another to campaign, like other candidates. He said he relied on lifts from the members of the public.
Meanwhile, the Facebook decampaigning, which is also tantamount to cyberbullying has not deterred Dlamini from looking forward to the 2028 elections. When he was asked if this was the last time he was participating in the elections, his response was ‘definetly not’.
He said he had learnt that for him to succeed, he had to visit more chiefdoms so that he could get to have more votes. Dlamini said he was confident that in the future, he could be the next MP of Sigwe.
