CLEOPAS, THEMBA OUT OF SENATE, 7 WOMEN IN
MBABANE - Former Prime Minister (PM) Cleopas Dlamini and his deputy Themba Masuku are notable figures that were left out of Senate, while at least six chiefs were appointed.
Attorney General Sifiso Mashampu Khumalo announced the 20 senators that were appointed by His Majesty King Mswati III and nine of them were part of the 11th Parliament while seven of the appointed senators are women. Cleopas was first appointed senator in the 11th Parliament before he swapped and moved to the House of Assembly, following his appointment as the new PM on July 2021. Masuku, who was his deputy, was also an appointed senator and both did not make it to the 12th Parliament.
Another notable figure that was not reappointed is former senator Vuka Moi Moi Masilela, one of the vocal legislators in the 11th Parliament. Those who were reappointed into Senate included Chief Mphatfwa, Chief Ndlaluhlaza Ndwandwe, Chief Zabeni Shiba, Chief Mvimbi Matse, Pholile Shakantu, Neal Rijkenberg, Isaac Magagula and former Senate President Lindiwe Dlamini.
Disabilities
Stukie Motsa, who represents people with disabilities, as she is living with albinism, is one of the new faces who were appointed by the head of State. It should be noted that there was a growing call observed from the submissions at Sibaya to have at least one person representing people with disabilities in Parliament. Members of the royal family also dominated the list as Princess Temaswati, Prince Lonkhokhela, Prince Ngangabani, Princess Ncengencenge were appointed.
