FIVE OF 19 MINISTERS NEW IN POLITICS
MBABANE – Of the 19 ministers who were announced by the Prime Minister, Russell Mmiso Dlamini on Monday, five are relatively new in politics.
While others have been serving government as civil servants, others have been in the private sector, while others have worked outside the country. Those who have been serving government include Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Jane Simelane, who has spent most of her working years at the deputy prime minister’s office.
Assignment
The Mbabane West MP served government for over three decades, kicking off her career under the Ministry of Agriculture and her last assignment as a civil servant was working as Under Secretary in the Ministry of Tinkhundla Administration and Development. Another one is Minister of Housing and Urban Development Appolo Maphalala, who has been serving under the same ministry for many years in different town boards. Prince Lonkhokhela, who was appointed Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, has been serving as the Chief Executive Officer at the Eswatini National Provident Fund (ENPF). The royal appointee Senator had never been active in the political sphere until now.
Minister of Agriculture Mandla Tshawuka, who is Mkhiweni MP, was in the private sector and served at the Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation for over three decades. Minister of Information, Communication and Technology Savannah Maziya and Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, Bongani Nzima, who is also Sandleni MP, had their operations outside the borders of Eswatini. The former is a businesswoman who is a member of the C200 Group. Nzima was also in the corporate sector serving in Geneva, Switzerland, as well as countries such as Sudan and Armenia.
While making his submissions before the King at Mandvulo Grand Hall recently, he revealed that his passion was to improve the welfare of the youth in the country. All the other ministers have been in the political sphere and have previously served as parliamentarians or part of the Cabinet team. Ministers who are new in Cabinet but have served a term as MPs include Minister of Health and Siphocosini MP Mduduzi Matsebula, as well as Minister of Tinkhundla Administration and Development Sikhumbuzo Dlamini, who is Nkwene MP.
