MBABANE – People with disabilities have every reason to smile.

This is because the Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg announced that this year’s budget came with an increase of some grants within the Deputy Prime Minister’s (DPM) Office.
The minister, in a press conference preceding his budget speech in Parliament yesterday, said the DPM’s Office was allocated E909 430 000 for the 2024/2025 financial year. “The disability grant would increase from E280 to E400,” he said.

He further mentioned that the number of disability grant beneficiaries would also increase. Last year, people who received the grant increased by 6 000 and tallied up to 11 379. In the 2024/2025 financial year, over 3 000 beneficiaries will be added, increasing the number of beneficiaries to 14 459. In Eswatini, persons with disabilities make up 13 per cent of the population, which translates to 146 554, and this means at least 10 per cent will be receiving the grant. Other grants like the OVC and elderly grants would remain the same.
