TEACHER ARRESTED AT SCHOOL
NHLANGANO – Eqinisweni pupils and teachers witnessed drama when police came to arrest a teacher during school hours.
Eqinisweni is along the road from Nhlangano to Lavumisa, about eight kilometres from Nhlangano Town. The teacher, Mbonisi Mangwe (51), was arrested for allegedly stealing school material and sanitary pads, among other things. It was alleged that the items were kept inside the staffroom when they were stolen. According to sources, the teacher allegedly has a key to the staffroom, as he would sometimes work late. It was said that the head teacher roped in the police after noticing that the items were missing. Some of the items included three boxes of typek papers valued at E1 650.
It was further alleged that the teacher also stole one box of 18 packs of Always sanitary pads, valued at E396, four face towels, eight loose Colgate toothpaste and mustard, E450 worth of school tracksuit. The total amount of the stolen items is E2 696. Mangwe was presented at the Shiselweni Magistrates Court in Nhlangano, before Magistrate Zwelithini Magagula. He was warned and discharged for April 7, 2024, wherein, he would come with his lawyer for setting of trial date. It was gathered that the school’s head teacher later made a call to the Shiselweni Regional Education Officer, enquiring if the teacher should continue working. The law provides that a person is innocent until proven guilty.
