TEACHER ARRESTED FOR RAPE OF PUPIL
MBABANE – A high school teacher has been charged for allegedly raping the mother of his child’s 19-year-old niece.
The complainant, who is a pupil in the same school, it is alleged, used to come to the teacher’s house to warm her food. *Thulani (39) is based in one of the schools in the Shiselweni Region. He is accused of contravening Section 3 (1) of the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence (SODV) Act of 15/2018. According to the charge sheet, Thulani allegedly forced himself on the complainant, who is a pupil in his school. The offence was allegedly committed on November 23, 2023.
Thulani said on Sunday, while in his allocated house at the teachers’ quarters, he received a call from the police, who wanted him to come to the police station. He said when he arrived at the police station, he was informed that there were allegations that sometime in November 2023, he had unlawful sexual intercourse with the complainant. According to Thulani, he was charged based on those allegations.
The accused denied committing the offence and said he had good prospects of success during trial. The teacher appeared before High Court Judge Nkosinathi Maseko yesterday. He was represented by Melusi Simelane of Piliso Simelane and Partners. He is currently in custody at the Nhlangano Correctional Services. His bail application is being opposed and the hearing was postponed to May 31, 2024.
