MANZINI - The financially unstable University of Eswatini (UNESWA) suffered another setback yesterday as EEC has pulled the plug over a debt amounting to over E8 million.

According to a source close to the matter, the electricity company cut off the electricity supply at the university yesterday morning at around 10am. The source highlighted that this took place when prospective students who were applying at the institution of higher learning were chasing the deadline, which was yesterday.

The insider said first-year students were at the institution. The developments were confirmed by UNESWA Acting Registrar Richard Masuku. He said as they had highlighted before, the institution was facing cash-flow challenges. He said they have challenges in paying utility bills, among other services.

The acting registrar also confirmed that the debt was a little over E8 million. On another note, Masuku said even though prospective students were applying yesterday when the power was cut, the process was not affected. He said they had been applying for admission manually since the beginning of the week.
