ALLEGED FB SCAMMER ARRESTED IN CAR CHASE, 2 WANTED

MBABANE – Police have made a major breakthrough in a facebook scam, where rogues posing as either salespersons or buyers were conning people of their money.

A high speed chase, ending at Mahwalala in Mbabane, resulted in the arrest of one of the individuals suspected to be behind the scam. Police believe the arrested young lad is part of an organised group of alleged scammers, who have been using social media platform Facebook to steal from people by false pretence.  Several people had reported that they had been conned by certain individuals, who had either pretended to be selling them electronics or livestock. The modus operandi used by the suspected miscreants is to advertise their ‘stock’ on the popular social media platform to hoodwink individuals to fall for the trick. The person is then promised delivery while being persuaded to make an upfront payment through Mobile money accounts, where the culprits used several phone numbers. The items are never delivered once the cash deposit has been made, and the ‘salespersons’ disappear without trace.

Searching

Police have been searching for the culprits since the complaints were registered. Then, yesterday while the investigation was underway, a tipster informed the police that he had spotted a motor vehicle, a blue VW Golf 5, which he suspected was being driven by the suspected scammers. The apprehended suspect, Luyanda Bhembe (23), has already made his initial court appearance, while police are still looking for his two alleged accomplices. The wanted suspects were identified as Qiniso Dlamini, who hails from Lozitha and Linda Khumalo, of Emasekweni.  This was confirmed by Acting Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Assistant Superintendent Nosipho Mnguni. She pleaded with anyone who may have seen or have information that may aid the ongoing investigation to come forward.
