MATSAPHA – “This is not a one-man show, we need a collective effort and united front to successfully fight crime.”

These were the words of new National Commissioner (NATCOM) of Police Vusi Manoma Masango, after being appointed by His Majesty King Mswati III, yesterday afternoon, at the Matsapha Police College. Interviewed after his appointment, Masango admitted that everything came as a shock to him, but was quick to declare his readiness confidently, for the task ahead. “I am still trying to come to terms with the appointment and I can only say Bayethe to the King for his trust. When the His Majesty shows such faith in you, it makes you feel very small. The truth is that this is a tough task because such responsibility is always heavy.

This is not a one-man show, we need a collective effort from the high executive of the police force, to the junior officers. If we are a united front, we will be successful in the fight against crime,” Masango said. Masango also urged all stakeholders including the media to support the police force with positive feedback, stressing that: “Do not focus on criticising us, but help us with information that will make our work easier and efficiently.” He joined the police force in 1986, which means he has been a police officer for 38 years, before his appointment yesterday. “When you count my years in the police force, it becomes apparent that I am close to retirement, but when you are given such a responsibility, you cannot say that you are also close to retiring.“You just take the task given, especially for us who have been initiated into the King’s regiment (kubutseka),” Masango said.

Appointment

His appointment put an end to months of speculation on the next NATCOM, after Lydia Dlamini was mandated to keep the fires burning at the helm following the untimely death of William Tsitsibala Dlamini. His Majesty announced the NATCOM’s appointment during the Police Day, which was in celebration of 117 years of existence, by the police force in the country. “I have been praying to the Almighty God for some time, to show me officers of honour, who can assume the driver’s seat and achieve our desired objectives for the police services,” the King said.

Noteworthy is that the King indicated that Masango was appointed into the position despite that he is also close to retirement, following in the footsteps of the acting NATCOM (Lydia). It was officially announced by the King that the acting NATCOM had officially retired and will now focus on her appointment into one of the King’s Councils (emabandla). “The new NATCOM is stepping into big shoes to fill, because he is replacing a woman who did an amazing job while acting in the position. She represented women very well and served the police service with due diligence. She must continue to maintain her impressive work ethnic, even in the other national duties that have been delegated to her,” the King said.
Information gathered is that Masango was now in his 50s hence it is expected that he will serve only one term (five years) as police chief.
