MANGCONGCO – Two elderly men aged 71 and 69 were part of seven couples who got married in a mass wedding this past Saturday.

The mass wedding ceremony was held at Mangcongco Free Evangelical Church. The event saw friends, relatives and members of the church coming together to wish the couples well.
The mass wedding ceremony was the idea of Pastor Mandla Shongwe. This was after he had a conversation with Daniel Motsa and realised that there were members of the church who were not officially married.Shongwe engaged with members of the church and identified the seven couples who were willing to get married. The event started at 10am and the couples entered the church, much to the appreciation of the well-wishers.Each couple had cakes placed in front of them.

Interviewed

They took turns to say their marriage vows. Interviewed after the mass wedding, Daniel and Thoko Motsa stated that they had been living together for over 45 years, having met in 1979.
Daniel said there were many contributing factors that led to them not getting married. These, he said, included living a sinful life and abusing alcohol. He said another factor was their disadvantaged background, hence they could not afford to get married. Daniel said the pastor went out of his way to even buy rings for them, adding that he only spent E500 for the wedding. The couple have nine children and four are deceased. Daniel said after quitting alcohol, he joined the church together with his partner.

He said the pastor approached him and asked whether he was officially married to his partner and the response was to the negative. Another elderly man, Hezekiel Simelane (71), married the love of his life, Fikile Ndlovu. Interviewed after making his vows, Simelane stated that he was cohabiting with Ndlovu and when they repented in church, they were already a couple. He said the idea came from the pastor of the church, who asked if they were officially married.  Simelane said the pastor asked the congregants and found out that some of the members wanted to change their Swazi Law and Custom marriages to civil rites. Simelane said he was very happy with being married and his heart was free. The couple has children from their previous relationships.
