ORPHAN PRESENTS KING WITH PORTRAIT
BHUNYA – The art of drawing won a 25-year-old orphan a one-on-one conversation with the King.Samkelo Hlophe said he travelled all the way from Mangcongco to present a portrait of the King to him. The artist said he lost both his parents and was raised by his aunt and grandmother. He said he was told that the King would be touring both Zondwako Clinic and Montigny Investments and he decided to take his chances. Hlophe first attempted to present the portrait after the King opened the Zondwako Clinic, but he did not get the chance. Not wanting to give up on his desire to present his work to the King, Hlophe followed the King to Montigny, where he finally got the chance to have a conversation with the head of State and present his art.
The King was impressed by his work and he asked him if he did the portrait all by himself, to which Hlophe responded to the affirmative. The King then instructed his praise singer Sandile ‘Msandi Kababa’ Nxumalo to take the details of the man as he wanted to have them. Nxumalo did as instructed by the King and he took the contact details, as Hlophe could not contain his excitement and wore a wide smile. Asked what inspired him to make the King’s portrait, Hlophe said he had so much love for the King and he wanted to do something nice for him using his talent. “I deeply love the King and doing his portrait was inspired by the love and respect I have for him. It means everything to me that he was impressed by it and that he spoke with me,” he said.
