MANZINI - The ongoing wildfires in the country have claimed a life.
This comes after a man, who was reportedly trying to put out a wildfire, which broke out yesterday afternoon on a farm located along Luve-Mafutseni Public Road, was burnt by the fire.
According to a source close to the matter, after the wildfire broke out at the farm, some members of the public tried to put it out. In the process, the source alleged that due to the wind that was experienced around that side of the country yesterday afternoon, the fire changed direction. He said since the farm is filled with thorny shrubs, it supposedly became difficult for the man to jump away from the fire, which was burning towards his direction with speed, considering that the grass on the farm was dry. As a result, he said the fire engulfed the man and burnt him to death.
Eswatini National Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (ENFRES) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mandla Dlamini confirmed the incident. However, by the time of compiling this report, details about the deceased were unknown, as the officers, who attended the incident, were still busy at the scene. On the same note, Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati also confirmed that a man died in a fire incident round Luve yesterday afternoon. She said the incident was attended by police from Mliba Police Station.
It is worth highlighting that in an effort to prevent such incidents, early June 2024, ENFRES, through the PRO’s Office, sent an early warning of wildfires to the nation. The organisation urged emaSwati to take the strong winds, which were experienced by the country at that time, as warning to prepare for the season ahead, which is usually characterised by wildfires that most often leave a trail of damage worth millions of Emalangeni. The service urged local governments and chiefdoms to invite them to their meetings, so that they could come to capacitate the nation on how to prevent wildfires and what do if they encounter them.

: 8% EEC Tariff Hike Cut
Does 8% cut have the potential to ease financial burdens for emaSwati?
