MBABANE - There was panic when a black mamba emerged next to the entrance of Park View Heights in Mbabane, yesterday.
Park View Heights comprises of residential and business units, opposite the Mbabane Magistrates Court. Screams were heard from a distance when vendors spotted the snake slithering towards the entrance of the building. Upon arrival at the scene, members of the public and occupants of the building were found gathered around the snake, which had its head cut off.
It was gathered that the snake was killed by one William Simelane, who acted swiftly when called to help the situation.  Information gathered was to the effect that Simelane, who is employed as a groundsman at the building, was called by the vendors after they spotted the snake from the opposite side of the street.

Building

It was gathered that Simelane was on his way to dump waste when called to assist the residents who were trying to block the snake from entering the building.Interviewed vendors said the snake might have fallen from a motor vehicle, which was parked next to the building. “We saw the snake just after the driver drove off from the parking space. He did not see the snake, which gave us the impression that it was hiding in the car without him noticing it. The snake appeared to be startled when the people screamed. I think it would have caused harm to the residents and passersby, had it not been for the quick intervention of Simelane,” a vendor said.

In an interview, Simelane said he had no option other than saving the lives of the people which he said were under threat. According to Simelane, the snake was ready to strike, judging from the way it was positioned. He said the snake had its head and the upper body slightly lifted from the ground, which gave the impression that it was ready to strike. He said using his experience, he hit the snake on its body to make it lose strength, before he killed it. According to Simelane, he was not sure what kind of a snake it was since it appeared to be a black mamba or a Mozambique spitting cobra.

He estimated the snake to be about 2.5 metres as it was longer than him.  He said his suspicion was that the snake was carried in a motor vehicle from outside Mbabane.  “It is not the first time a big snake emerges from a motor vehicle here. A few years back, a snake which was slightly bigger than this one fell from a motor vehicle while parked at the Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Services. We did not attempt to kill it, but called the Eswatini National Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services to deal with it,” he said. The occupants of the building thanked Simelane for killing the snake before it harmed anyone.
