EZULWINI – The Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) will continue to keep the lights on, post 2025.

This is because the contract between Eswatini and Eskom has been reviewed and extended by 10 more years, leaving emaSwati with the comfort that the supply of electricity will continue for more years to come. This was revealed by EEC Managing Director Ernest Mkhonta, during the 3rd edition of the EU Green Power Transformation Forum 2024 held at the Happy Valley Hotel yesterday. The event was hosted by Business Eswatini (BE) and generously sponsored by the European Union (EU) delegation in Eswatini and supported by government’s esteemed partners GIZ, GET Invest, and GET Transform. It was expected that Eswatini’s contract with the South African State-owned energy provider, Eskom, will come to an end next year.

Secured

However, Mkhonta has allayed those fears and assured emaSwati that there will be power post 2025, as they have secured the power supply to the country. He said the next stage that they are working on is that electricity should come at an affordable price for everyone, in particular industries, because they need them to catalyse growth in the country’s economy. Mkhonta said they also need the industries to continue providing the crossed subsidy to domestic consumers. He highlighted that the electricity consumed by domestic customers is subsidised by the big factories in the country.

Mkhonta added that currently, EEC is working with the regulator, Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority (ESERA), to absorb those independent power producers (IPPs) that have been secured and to make sure that all the agreements implemented are fair for everyone. “The IPPs need to survive, the utility needs to survive and so does the consumer,” said Mkhonta.
