MBABANE – Three old graves were desecrated by unknown people at Peak Timber Forest on Wednesday.

Suspicions quickly fell on illegal miners, known as zama zamas, who are believed to have targeted the graves in hopes of finding Krugerrands buried with the deceased. According to sources, the incident was discovered by a Peak Timber Forest employee around 8:15am at the old Pigg’s Peak, Peak Timber Forest.A representative of Peak Timber Forest confirmed the incident, but said they cannot comment on the matter, as it was reported to the police. The representative said the matter is still under investigation and any further comments will jeopardise that process.

“The company has got nothing to say until the police are done with the investigation. After we saw this, we reported to the police,” the representative said. In an almost similar matter, in 2014, four men, including three businessmen, were arrested for desecrating a grave in the still of the night. The men are said to have been searching for what they believed to be ‘Kruger gold coins’ which were buried with nine relatives some 100 years ago.

The suspects were alleged to have first sprinkled muti on the grave as a way of appeasing the ‘ghosts’ before digging it up.A bottle with a red substance inside believed to be muti was found at the scene.  The shocking incident happened just two kilometres from Hlatikhulu town at White City, an area known as Ejikeni. The four men were alleged to have started digging the grave at around 10:30pm until 5:30am.
