MBABANE - “Government does not kill or poison suspects.”

This is according to government Spokesperson, Alpheous Nxumalo. This follows accusations that government may allegedly have had a hand in the poisoning of the People’s United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO) President, Mlungisi Makhanya. Makhanya was hospitalised following a suspected poisoning incident at his South African residence yesterday.
Reports indicate that Makhanya became ill shortly after consuming a meal, triggering an emergency response and his subsequent hospitalisation. The exact details of his condition remain undisclosed, though concerns about his safety have ignited widespread speculation online.

Hospitalised

PUDEMO Secretary General (SG), Penuel Malinga, in a statement, confirmed that Makhanya has been hospitalised following a suspected poisoning incident in the early hours of yesterday morning. Malinga said the president is currently receiving the best possible medical care and is under security protection. “PUDEMO is in close contact with the president’s family and is ensuring that they are supported during this difficult time. We are committed to keeping the public informed about any developments throughout the day,” Malinga said.
Furthermore, the SG urged all supporters and the public to keep Makhanya in their thoughts and prayers, as they wish him a swift recovery.

News of the incident broke on social media platforms, where a flurry of reactions surfaced. Several users have voiced suspicions alleging that government may be involved, with some pointing to Makhanya’s outspoken opposition to the regime as a possible motive. In a statement, the government spokesperson said: ‘‘In regard to the social media reports alleging that Makhanya has been ‘poisoned’ by his very own comrade/s; government is aware of the insinuations to the effect that Mlungisi might have been ‘poisoned’ with the knowledge of this government’.

Nxumalo said government does not kill or poison suspects.  “Government, through the law enforcement agencies that adhere to a strict code of ethics and professionalism, only apprehend suspects and bring them to Justice, and they are brought to justice alive, not dead,” Nxumalo said. He stated that government is aware of one terroristic social media entity’s fondness for associating, miring and dragging people’s names into such shenanigans, without any outer evidence. He alleged that this social media entity thrives in peddling lies, disinformation and misinformation. “As usual, his tabloid journalism is hereby rejected with the total contempt it deserves,” he said.
