MBABANE - Exactly seven days after a police officer, who was part of the prime minister’s security detail, shot his wife and committed suicide, another police officer shot and killed himself at the Swazi Plaza Police Post yesterday.

Swazi Plaza Police Post is situated within the city centre and a few police officers are stationed there. The incident happened at around 5:30pm, inside the police post. The police constable, who was dressed in uniform, is said to have shot himself twice in the head using a service pistol. According to sources, the first shot missed him. This was after the police officer, whose identity cannot be revealed for now, pending the notification of his next-of-kin about his death, was on duty with a female colleague at the police post. According to sources, after *Sipho shot himself, his colleague was seen coming out of the police post to seek assistance.

Preparing

When this reporter arrived at the scene, more than 10 police officers were found preparing to remove the body of the police officer from the police post to take it to the mortuary. Between 5:30pm, when the police officer shot himself, and 7:30pm, his body was still inside the police post, where there was a pool of blood. The body was ferried in a Scenes of Crime van around 7:30pm. Senior police investigators were also present at the scene. The deceased officer was among the last group of recruits, who passed out last year. After the incident, the Swazi Plaza Police Post was closed. Last week, the prime minister’s bodyguard, Frans Dlamini shot his wife, Nomfundo Sihlongonyane, who was also a police officer,  twice in the head and turned the gun, a service pistol, on himself. He shot himself once in the head.

The incident happened in their homestead at Mpolonjeni in Mbabane. Their bodies were found in their house by a neighbour who heard gunshots and went to the homestead to investigate. The neighbour found the two bodies in a pool of blood inside the house and called the police. Yesterday’s incident happened before the couple has been buried.  Reached for comment, Chief Police Information and Communication Officer Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, confirmed the incident, but said she was not in a position to disclose further details as it was soon.
