MBABANE – A liSwati woman has been arrested in Barberton, South Africa (SA), for allegedly being found in possession of four firearms.
The woman was arrested by members of the police who were carrying out Operation Vala Umgodi in Mpumalanga last Tuesday. This was confirmed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Mpumalanga Spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli. In a media statement issued by the Office of the Provincial Commissioner in Mpumalanga, Mdhluli stated that the woman was found in a house during a search conducted by the officers, who also discovered an explosive device concealed under the bed. According to Mdhluli, the police also uncovered four firearms, including three pistols; Norinco, Glock and Z88, as well as one shotgun. He noted that the serial numbers on the three pistols had been filed off. Furthermore, he mentioned that 32 rounds of ammunition and dagga were also confiscated.

The spokesperson reported that the police were conducting a routine patrol at Sinqobile Village, when they observed three suspicious males sitting outside the house.  He stated that the police stopped to investigate and before they could question them, the three males fled the scene. The spokesperson added that the police have since launched a manhunt for the three suspects who escaped. Mdhluli indicated that police then returned to the house where the woman was found. Meanwhile, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the officers for their excellent work. He remarked: “We are elated that members possibly prevented the loss of life as a result of these lethal weapons.”
In another recent incident, SAPS in Mpumalanga arrested three individuals who were in possession of firearms, allegedly heading to Eswatini. The suspects were carrying five firearms, which had their serial numbers filed off. They were arrested between Wonderfontein and Alzu in June 2023. Additionally, another 37-year-old liSwati was arrested by SAPS for possession of hijacked motor vehicles. The arrests followed a tip-off about a syndicate involved in hijacking and transporting vehicles from SA to Eswatini.
