MAN FOUND DEAD IN POLICE CELL
SITEKI – A 49-year-old man of Tingodvweni, under Maphungwane Umphakatsi, reportedly died in a police cell.
Jeremiah Mjomane Mamba succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night in a cell at Siteki Police Station. A source close to the matter shared that the deceased was arrested and charged for being found sleeping on a grave. The source said the police officers on night duty found the motionless body of Mamba in the cell when conducting a routine check on suspects in their custody. The source alleged that one of the police officers called his colleagues from the police station to come and inspect the body of the deceased.
Unfortunate
“It is unfortunate that the police were not sure if the arrested suspect needed medical attention, as he did not show signs of discomfort when he was arrested. The police conducted an inspection on his body and found that he was heavily assaulted and took the body to the hospital, where he was certified dead,” elaborated the source. The source also stated that the deceased was waiting to appear in court, after being charged for sleeping on top of a grave, as doing so is a criminal offence. “I think due to his drunken stupor, the police felt that they should leave him alone until Monday to sober up, while preparations for his court appearance were to be finalised.
“However, when the routine inspections were conducted, they found that his body was motionless, hence they inspected the body and found that he had been assaulted,” said the source.
According to Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, police were called by residents in the afternoon of the fateful day, when they found the man in a questionable state of sobriety, fast asleep on top of a grave at a graveyard. Vilakati stated that they suspected that the man had died from assault by unknown people, hence the police conducted an inspection on his body and found that he had bruises.
Confirm
“We can confirm that a man died and it was established that he was assaulted,” she said. Tingodvweni Community Health Motivator Qondeni Dlamini, shared that Mamba, who was unemployed, was assaulted and members of the public called the police when they discovered that he was weak. “He is a known man in the community and he usually visits drinking spots to quench his thirst. It is unfortunate that he had to be assaulted for being found sleeping on a grave,” she said. A resident of the area, Make Matsenjwa, explained that the graves are situated next to a path. Matsenjwa said Mamba’s sin was being found by family members whom the grave belonged to, hence they were infuriated by his act and they assaulted him. The resident added that the family members in question further called the police and a statement was recorded. She stated that his assailants were angered by finding him sleeping on top of one of the grave of their late relative.
