TEACHERS DAY: SNAT LOSES ROUTE CASE AGAINST COUNCIL
MANZINI - The Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) lost the route case against the Municipal Council of Manzini.
The teachers association, which wants to host a sensitisation march for its World Teachers Day commemoration today, ran to court after the municipality did not approve its proposed route and gave it an alternative one. Initially, SNAT had proposed that the starting point for the march should be King Somhlolo Park and cross Nkoseluhlaza Street at Manzini Post Office towards Eswatini National Provident Fund (ENPF).
They said from there, they want the march to proceed to the four-way stop towards Manzini Magistrates Court, where it will take a turn towards Manzini Bus rank and cross Mzimnene River to Mavuso Trade Centre. However, the municipality said due to concerns about potential traffic disruptions and public safety, particularly as this event coincides with month-end; a time known for heavy traffic and pedestrian congestion, they provided an alternative route for the march. However, after a lengthy argument between the two parties, Manzini Principal Magistrate Florence Msibi ruled in favour of the municipality. She said the municipality gave SNAT an alternative route after it had considered some important factors.
