HMCS REFUTES DAVID SIMELANE RELEASE CLAIMS
MBABANE – “These are untrue and unfounded rumours!”
His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) has issued a statement refuting recent allegations circulating on various media platforms regarding the potential granting of parole of David Thabo Simelane, an inmate currently serving a death sentence in one of the country’s Correctional facilities. HMCS expressed its astonishment at the claims, which it described as ‘untrue and unfounded’. Simelane has been serving his sentence since his conviction in 2011, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court of Appeal. HMCS clarified that neither the Commissioner General nor the King’s Prerogative of Mercy has altered Simelane’s sentences since their confirmation.
Commitment
Furthermore, the department highlighted its commitment to rehabilitation, noting that while it offers a range of programmes aimed at preparing inmates for reintegration into society, Simelane has not participated in any of these initiatives. “Since his arrest in 2001, he has remained steadfastly in custody, with his conviction status unchanged following the Supreme Court’s ruling,” the statement read in part. His Majesty’s Correctional Services reiterated its adherence to the rule of law and its responsibility to manage inmates according to judicial mandates. The rumours about Simelane’s parole have sparked outrage among emaSwati.
