2 ARRESTED FOR TIBIYO JOBS SCAM
NHLANGANO – Two men have been arrested in connection with a scam targeting job seekers.
Banele Sanele Bhembe (38) and Khethizwe Bobo Mnisi (37), allegedly promised job opportunities at Tibiyo TakaNgwane to unsuspecting individuals, defrauding them of amounts ranging from E1 200 and upwards. They reportedly used Mobile Money (MoMo) to receive payments. The duo appeared at the Nhlangano Magistrates Court on Tuesday, facing 12 charges, including theft by false pretences and violations of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, Computer Crime Act, and Money Laundering Act.
Bail
During their bail hearing, both accused claimed to be primary breadwinners in their families. However, the prosecution opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the charges and the potential risk of the accused interfering with the ongoing investigation. Magistrate Sifiso Ngwenya denied them bail, stating that the accused’s actions appeared to be part of a larger fraudulent scheme. The case has been adjourned to November 21. The arrested individuals are now 34. Meanwhile, one of the people who have been arrested for the ‘facata’ scam, alleged that they were heavily tortured when they were arrested.
Ncamiso Tsabedze (26) of Malindza made this allegation in his application for bail. He is still in custody because the Crown opposed his bail application and it will be argued after the relevant affidavits have been filed. Tsabedze was mentioned by some of those arrested for these offences, who claimed that he sent them to make cash withdrawals from Standard Bank ATMs or through MTN Mobile Money (MoMo).
