MAHLABATSINI – In yet another horrific act of violence, a 32-year-old woman lost her life after being stabbed to death by her boyfriend, allegedly over cheating claims.
The incident happened in the wee hours of Monday at Mahlabatsini in Matsapha, under Kwaluseni Inkhundla. The deceased, Simangele Khumalo of Sitsatsaweni, was renting a one-room flat in the area since 2021. According to an informed source, Simangele was working at West Pack Lifestyle at Matsapha Link. Her alleged killer is employed in neighbouring South Africa.

The boyfriend’s name is known to this publication, but will not be revealed for now because he has not been officially charged and has not appeared in court.
The source said, about five months ago, the boyfriend, *Thulani, started visiting her and about two months ago, they had a fierce fight and the landlord had to call community police in the middle of the night. According to one of the community police members, Vincent Vilakati, who was part of the team that attended the couple at that time, said they found him outside the house having broken his girlfriend’s cellphone and the door of her rented flat.

interrogated

When they interrogated him, he claimed that he was drunk and was hurt by his girlfriend who talked with a man over the phone while he was asleep. “In fact, he said he overheard the man asking his girlfriend for some nude pictures and she promised to send them on the following day, because at that moment she was not in a good space and he failed to control his anger because he had taken Sibebe Beer,” the community police member said. He said after hearing the story, they intervened in terms of reconciling them and later on, the man bought a new cellphone for his girlfriend and also replaced the door.

This, he said, they took as an effort to make their relationship work and to apologise both to his girlfriend and landlord. Indeed, he said after that, he visited his girlfriend about two or three times, before the unfortunate episode. He said this time around, the man arrived on Friday and spent the whole weekend with his girlfriend’s neighbours as he was working during the day. However, he said even though the neighbours were enjoying alcoholic beverages, the man did not, purportedly because he was suffering from a stomach ache.

emergency

Thereafter, he said on Monday morning, just after 2am, they received an emergency call from the landlord, who asked them to rush to his home as the couple was fighting inside the house. He highlighted that the landlord informed them that she and some of her tenants were failing to break the padlock of the burglar door. “When we arrived, we managed to break the padlock and door. We found both of them lying in a pool of blood,” Vilakati said.He said that Thulani had a stab wound around his chest and was alive, however, the woman was already dead. He said when they searched the house, they found one knife under the bed and another by the wall unit and they were both handed over to the police, together with the padlock.
The community police member revealed that when they spoke to the landlord, she told them that after the woman screamed for help, she approached the house with the aim of stopping the fight.

argument

However, he said when she was by the window, she saw the woman’s phone on the ground, which meant that it was thrown out through the window during the argument. “We do not know who threw it out and why. Maybe there is something that sparked the argument over the cellphone,” Vilakati presumed. Again, he said the landlord also told them that while they were trying to break the padlock of the burglar door, they heard the woman saying; “Ngicela ume, sale ulala nami ke ngenkhani (Please stop, you can rape me).” He said they supposed that when she uttered those words, the man was stabbing her. Again, later on, he said the landlord also told them the man shouted that: “Sengimubulele, kepha naye ungigwazile (I have killed her, but she also stabbed me).” He said the police were called and they rushed both of them to Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital, where the woman was certified dead upon arrival, while Thulani was admitted.

effort

This publication made an effort to talk to Thulani in hospital yesterday, however, he told the medical practitioners that he does not want to speak to the media. On the other hand, the landlord also confirmed the narration by the community police, but said she is still not in a good state to talk about the matter. “I am still struggling emotionally and otherwise to deal with what I saw there,” she said.Meanwhile, Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati said on Monday, at around 2:15am, a 32-year-old woman of Sitsatsaweni, was stabbed with a sharp object several times in her upper body, allegedly by her boyfriend, while she was in her rented house at Mahlabatsini, Matsapha.
She said the woman was rushed to hospital, where she was confirmed dead upon arrival. She said the suspect is a 39-year-old man of Hluti and he has been arrested.
