DRAMA AS NEW SIFUNDZANI PRIMARY HEAD INTRODUCED
MBABANE – Tension erupted at Sifundzani Primary School after the Ministry of Education and Training officially introduced the school’s new head teacher, Barbara Mamba.
Following the head teacher’s speech, ministry officials and Mamba abruptly left the meeting room, leaving some parents and staff members behind. The formal introduction was made by the Hhohho Regional Education Officer (REO), Dr Nkosinathi Nkambule, on behalf of the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) and the Ministry of Education and Training. Nkambule stated that the TSC had appointed Mamba to the position on November 21, 2024. During the REO’s introduction, some murmurs could be heard from parents and staff members present at the meeting.
Nkambule urged the staff to cooperate with the new head teacher and seek assistance from the ministry when needed. He assured them that the ministry had already handed over all necessary information to Mamba and that their jobs were secure. Addressing allegations raised by some staff members, Nkambule clarified that the school’s operations would remain unchanged and its unique character would be preserved. In her first speech as head teacher, Mamba expressed gratitude for the support she had received and emphasised the importance of teamwork and communication. She also stressed the significance of trusting in God, referencing the school’s motto, ‘Tsemba Nkulunkulu usebente kakhulu’. However, after her brief speech, Mamba left with the officials, leaving parents and staff members feeling frustrated and concerned. The situation escalated to the point where police intervention was required to calm some of the parents.
Concerns
Parents and staff members demanded a meeting with the head teacher to address their concerns, including the lack of communication regarding the school’s upcoming speech and prize-giving day and the uncertainty surrounding the school Board. They also questioned the ministry’s decision to appoint a new head teacher without proper consultation. The REO apologised for the abrupt departure and acknowledged the validity of the parents’ concerns. He suggested that a formal meeting be held to address these issues, but emphasised the importance of following the school’s established procedures.
Nkambule further explained that some of the issues raised were beyond his authority and would need to be addressed by the Principal Secretary’s Office. He assured parents that the ministry is committed to listening to their concerns and working towards resolving them. Despite the REO’s assurances, parents remained sceptical and expressed frustration over the lack of transparency and communication from the ministry. They demanded a prompt meeting to address their concerns and ensure the future of the school.
