CITY COUNCIL TO MEET PROGRESSIVES OVER MOZ UNREST PETITION
MBABANE – The Municipal Council of Mbabane, together with other stakeholders, is expected to meet progressives tomorrow.
The meeting comes after the Mass Democratic Movement (MDM), led by the Ngwane National Liberatory Congress (NNLC) wrote a letter to the municipality to request a permit to march and deliver a petition to the Embassy of Mozambique. The letter, which is dated December 31, 2024 reads: “We, the people of Swaziland (Eswatini) under the MDM led by the NNLC hereby inform your office that on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 we shall have a march from the Mbabane Government Bus Stop to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of Mozambique starting at 10am”.
The letter also states that the purpose of the march is to deliver a petition on the escalation of political violence in the people’s republic. The letter, which was addressed to the Municipal Council of Mbabane, which is currently under the leadership of Gciniwe Fakudze, was signed by NNLC Secretary General Bheka Mabuza. NNLC President, Sibongile Mazibuko, who has claimed that she is the one who submitted the letter to the municipality last Tuesday, raised her disappointment following a statement that was issued by the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS).
REPS said they have uncovered that certain organisations or individuals want to take advantage of the political situation and disturb peace. According to the statement by REPS, it came to their attention that the organisations or individuals want to take advantage of the situation and use it as a decoy to commit criminal acts. As a result, REPS issued a strong caution to these elements it claimed intend to fulfil egocentric agendas at the expense of the national security. As an organisation entrusted with safeguarding the peace, tranquillity and sovereignty of the country, REPS said they are alive and well prepared to deal with any and all possible eventualities that may be consequent of this situation.
The police service said in the spirit of jealous patriotism and cooperation, they urge all emaSwati to heighten their sense of vigilance and alertness in order to promptly report any elements that have a potential to threaten the safety and security landscape. Also, REPS urged members of the public to report all persons who will be coming to their homes seeking for any assistance to the relevant authorities.
While the statement did not give a hint on whether the organisations or individuals are in the country and the type of criminal acts they want to commit, Mazibuko reacted strongly to it.
Interviewed yesterday, she said what irked her is the fact that after delivering the letter to the municipality, she proceeded to the police station in Mbabane and did same.
