BE WARNED: HEAVY RAINFALL FROM TODAY
NHLANGANO - The Eswatini Meteorological Service has issued a warning of heavy rainfall expected across the country from today to Wednesday.
In a media release, the Department of Meteorology stated that an upper air trough will draw substantial tropical moisture into the central and eastern parts of South Africa, leading to a high risk of disruptive rain and localised flooding. This weather system is anticipated to remain over the country until Wednesday night. Scattered widespread rain showers and thunderstorms are predicted throughout the country due to the influence of this system. Rainfall accumulations are expected to be significant, with amounts potentially exceeding 50-70mm in some areas.
The rainfall distribution is likely to be over the whole country, hence the difficulty in singling out a particular region or area.
The significant rainfall poses
several risks, including:
- Flooding of low-lying bridges and roads
- Slippery road conditions, increasing the risk of accidents
- Damage to property and infrastructure
- Landslides in some areas
- Threats to human life
- The Department of Meteorology urges the public to take necessary precautions, including:
- Avoiding travel on bridges or roads in low-lying areas
- Refraining from crossing flooded bridges or swollen streams/rivers
- Exercising caution when driving due to the risk of landslides
The South African Weather Service has also issued a severe weather warning for a number of areas in the country, including Piet Retief, which could have significant impacts on the border town. Given its close proximity to Nhlangano, there is a potential for heavy rainfall and flooding in the area. The warning issued today predicts disruptive rain with localised flooding in low-lying areas and bridges. There is also a high possibility of road closures, especially on low-lying and dirt roads, due to heavy rainfall.
