MBABANE – The area of Mambane was thrown into a state of unease this week after a heist targeted the consultation room of a respected inyanga in the area.
The incident, which occurred on January 6, 2025, saw unknown assailants break into the indumba (consultation house) of the inyanga (traditional healer) identified as Ndzinisa and made off with an estimated E30 740 worth of traditional medicines and healing kits. Mambane is a village in the Lubombo Region. It is situated near the hamlet Lukhalweni, as well as near Mvimbi. The theft has sent shockwaves through the community, not just for the financial loss, but also for the deep-seated cultural and spiritual implications. In African belief systems, muti (traditional medicine) holds immense power, both for healing and for harm. It is considered sacred and deeply connected to the ancestral spirits. According to a source, the thieves did not take other items that were inside the indumba, apart from the muti and the healing kits belonging to Ndzinisa. The incident was reported to the police, who are currently investigating and the suspects are still at large.

“Stealing muti is not just a crime against an individual,” explained a fellow inyanga who wished to remain anonymous. “It is an affront to the ancestors, a disruption of the delicate balance between the physical and spiritual realms.” He went on to warn that the thieves would face dire consequences, stating, “They will not know peace. The spirits will not forgive this desecration. Bad luck will surely follow them.” This belief in the spiritual repercussions of muti theft is deeply ingrained in many African cultures. Muti is often gathered with specific rituals and prayers, imbuing it with the energy of the natural world and the blessings of the ancestors. Disrupting this sacred connection is seen as a grave transgression, with potential consequences ranging from illness and misfortune to even death.

The incident has also raised concerns about the growing desperation in the community. Some speculate that the thieves were driven by poverty or the belief that stolen muti could grant them supernatural powers.  However, most agree that the act is a blatant disregard for tradition and the spiritual well-being of the community. A source close to the matter urged the community to come forward with any information that may lead to the arrest of the culprits. He believes that the theft is not just a personal loss, but a threat to the integrity of traditional healing practices. The investigation into the muti theft is ongoing. “As the community grapples with the incident, one thing is certain: The shadow of the ancestors now looms large over the thieves, a reminder that the consequences of their actions may extend far beyond the material world,” said another traditional healer, after hearing the news of the theft at his colleague’s indumba.
