MBABANE – An Ethiopian national, wanted in Eswatini on fraud, theft and corruption charges, has been arrested in South Africa. The arrest of Kadebe Shanko Abose was announced by the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (HAWKS) in a statement earlier this month. The statement details that two Ethiopian nationals, Firehiwot Koira Assego (40) and Shanko Abose Gezahegna (40), were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team following a sting operation on Friday, January 31, 2025, in Kempton Park.

Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Ramovha, revealed that both suspects are asylum seekers in South Africa. “The complainant, a warrant officer from Interpol in Pretoria, reported that on Friday, January 31, he had arrested Kadebe Shanko Abose, also an Ethiopian national, on an extradition matter involving charges of fraud, theft and corruption reportedly committed in Eswatini,” Ramovha said. Abose was appearing in Kempton Park Court for contravening the Immigration Act.

The two accused, Shanko Abose Gezahegna (Abose’s brother) and Firehiwot Koira Assego (Abose’s wife), later approached the police officer. They offered E40 000 in exchange for Abose’s release.“An arrangement was made for the same day at an eatery along Monument Road in Kempton Park. Meanwhile, the officer coordinated with the Hawks SCI team,” the statement reads. The pair was arrested after handing over the money. They appeared in court on Monday, January 3, 2025, and the case was postponed to Monday, January 10, 2025, pending further investigation.

Chief Police Information and Communication Officer Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati had not confirmed that the Ethiopian national was a wanted suspect in Eswatini at the time of this report, as she was still verifying. In a similar case in December 2024, an Eastern Cape tavern owner was arrested for attempting to bribe police with cash. Police from Komani (formerly Queenstown) were conducting Safer Festive Season operations when they discovered a tavern open past curfew.  The tavern owner offered a bribe to keep the establishment open, and officers promptly arrested him.
