EMAFAHLAWANE BUSINESS BOOM, NO MERCY FOR ‘DDS’
MBABANE - As the Marula Festival approaches, artisans are working tirelessly to ensure that the Lutsango regiment presents a worthy display at the event’s first leg.
The Marula Festival is one of the most significant events during which the Lutsango regiment pays homage to Their Majesties. This homage is expressed through the presentation of buganu brew, along with other offerings, while cultural dances are also showcased before throngs of guests.
At the bustling Mbabane Market yesterday, Nokubonga Nxumalo and Nosizo Dladla were busy preparing emafahlawane, traditional instruments that play a vital role in cultural dances.
In an interview, the duo expressed their commitment to meeting their deadline, stating: “We should be done by 10am tomorrow (today) as the owners will be fetching their product.” Emafahlawane are not merely decorative; they serve a crucial function in cultural celebrations. Emafahlawane are used to set the pace and rhythm of songs during traditional dances, acting as a unifying element for the performers.
Their significance extends beyond the auditory experience, embodying the spirit and heritage of the cultural practices they represent. The artisans expressed that their efforts aim not only to ensure the regiment looks presentable but also to resonate with the sounds that honour their heritage.
The duo said the sales ranged from E150 to E350 depending on the size and decorations. Meanwhile, as anticipation builds for a weekend of celebratory events at Buhleni Royal Residence, where Buganu will be the libation of choice, the police have reminded attendees of the paramount importance of safety.
Festivities
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati addressed the public in an interview, reiterating the unchanged laws surrounding drink-driving and the need for responsible behaviour during the festivities. Vilakati underscored that while enjoying the celebrations is encouraged, safety must remain a priority. “We are not opposed to people having a good time, but we urge everyone to prioritise their safety and the safety of others,” she stated. She highlighted the serious consequences that can arise from consuming alcohol and then driving, emphasising that laws against drink-driving remain in full force.
“Drink-driving is a punishable offence and we implore attendees to avoid getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol,” she added.
In addition to the risks associated with drink-driving, Vilakati addressed another pressing concern; the safety of livestock on the roads leading to Buhleni Royal Residence. With common sightings of cattle, donkeys, goats and pigs in the vicinity, she urged farmers and livestock owners to take precautions to prevent their animals from straying onto the roads.
