BUGANU FESTIVAL: A JOYOUS CELEBRATION OF UNITY, HAPPINESS
BUHLENI - The annual Buganu (Marula) Festival was once again a grand spectacle as Her Majesty the Indlovukazi warmly welcomed the vibrant Lutsango regiment at Buhleni Royal Residence.
The joyous festival, held over the weekend, was marked by the arrival of thousands of Lutsango members from all corners of Eswatini, who came bearing gifts and in high spirits to celebrate the cherished cultural event. The festival, one of the biggest in the country, saw the presentation of traditional gifts to Her Majesty, a longstanding tradition that continues to foster a strong sense of unity and appreciation for Eswatini’s rich cultural heritage.
Among the gifts presented were the renowned buganu (marula) brew, pumpkins, fresh fruits and a variety of vegetables, all symbolising the nation’s bountiful harvest and generosity. A unique and crucial part of the festival is the ritual that requires Lutsango members delivering the buganu brew to taste it first at the entrance before presenting it to Her Majesty.
This customary practice ensures the authenticity and purity of the beverage, which is then carefully collected and poured into tanks by the Libutfo (royal regiment) for the thousands of attendees to enjoy. Her Majesty, visibly delighted, observed the presentations with keen interest as the gifts kept pouring in.
The Buganu Festival remains a highly anticipated cultural highlight, drawing not only emaSwati from different regions of the country but also tourists from across the globe. The vibrant gathering at Buhleni Royal Residence serves as a platform to celebrate the marula season and showcase the kingdom’s deep-rooted traditions.
Lutsango, adorned in their traditional regalia, filled the air with ululations and melodious singing, reflecting the enthusiasm that comes with this cultural celebration. The energy and excitement are expected to reach even greater heights as the festivities continue, with today’s highlight being Her Majesty and His Majesty King Mswati III joining the regiment in song and dance at the Buhleni dancing arena.
In a lighthearted moment, Her Majesty humorously addressed the Minister for Information, Communication and Technology, Savannah Maziya, expressing that she had not heard the song from the ministry’s regiment.
Warmth
The jest was met with laughter, adding to the warmth and camaraderie that defines the Buganu Festival. Such interactions further showcase the deep connections and sense of family among the nation’s leaders and their people.
