GOLD DEAL: ‘SELLER’ KIDNAPPED, 4 ARRESTED
MANZINI - A gold deal gone wrong resulted in a man being kidnapped and forcibly placed into the boot of a car, before being abandoned near Dvokolwako Mine.
A liSwati woman and three South African men were arrested in connection with the kidnapping of Sigayoyo Mphanga, who was bundled into a South African-registered car and left by the mine on Tuesday.
The accused - Nolwazi Knowledge Vilakati (28) from Maseyisini; Vusi Mfanukhona Sibeko (40) from Germiston, Johannesburg; Leon Zimase Mbhacu (35) also from Germiston; and Nkosinathi Bethuel Khumalo from Phongolo - appeared before Magistrate Sihle Dludlu at the Manzini Magistrates Court yesterday for the crimes they committed on Tuesday.
They faced charges of kidnapping, while Mbhacu was additionally charged with entering Eswatini unlawfully without the necessary entry permits. Represented by lawyer Ziphozethu Mnisi, the accused did not contest the charges. According to information gathered by this publication, Mphanga had sold gold to the accused for approximately E13 000, but failed to deliver the agreed goods. This led to the kidnapping, which the four reportedly carried out in retribution.
All four pleaded guilty to the charges. During mitigation, Mnisi explained that the kidnapping was a result of the accused’s frustration after Mphanga failed to honour the gold deal and owed them a significant amount of money. The defence lawyer further stated that his clients were deeply apologetic for their actions.
The court sentenced each of the accused to five months in prison, with the option of paying a fine of E500 in lieu of serving the sentence for the first count. Mbhacu was also given the same sentence for the immigration violation.
