Lobamba – When family or friends gather at the hospital bed of a dying person, it is often their last words that remain forever in the hearts of those they leave behind.

In the week after February 24, 2025, the nation was shocked by the news of the popular businessman Jomo Nkambule, who was hacked to death, allegedly by robbers.
He is said to have died while being attended to at the hospital, surrounded by family members, as medical personnel tried in vain to save his life.
However, before he passed away, he had some words for his family. According to his siblings, in the last moments of his life, he said “thank you”, expressing gratitude to God and to his family members. This was revealed by his siblings yesterday at the Christian Revival Centre, where a memorial service was held in Lobamba.

The Christian Revival Centre in Lobamba was filled to capacity as mourners gathered to bid farewell to the businessman, travelling not only from all corners of the country but also from outside. The emotional memorial service, held yesterday, was marked by solemn reflections, heartfelt tributes, and messages of forgiveness from the bereaved family.
Nkambule and his brother were attacked while heading towards Sidwashini, where they were reportedly robbed of cash and a belt, which their assailants allegedly used to whip them before hacking them.
The tragic incident, which has left the community in shock, has sparked renewed concerns about safety and violent crime in the country.
A relative revealed that Nkambule, in his final moments, also inquired about his brother, who had been hospitalised after surviving the attack. This show of concern and love, even in his dying moments, was a testament to the kind of man Nkambule was. He was described as selfless, caring, and devoted to his family.

kind-hearted

Throughout the memorial service, family members and friends took turns describing Nkambule as a generous and kind-hearted individual who always extended a helping hand to those in need. Many mourners, both inside the crowded church and those who remained outside due to space limitations, sat in deep contemplation as they listened to touching speeches about the businessman’s life and legacy.
Nhlanhla Dlamini, a friend who spoke at the service, narrated how close the men were. He said that even when they differed, almost to the point of not talking, Nkambule would be the one to call and inquire if they were not speaking, just to lighten the moment.

Dlamini also revealed how, around 2019, while he was in Cape Town, Nkambule surprised him with a video call only to inform him that he was also in Cape Town.
One of the most moving tributes came from his wife, Nonhlanhla, whose message was read out by a relative. In her emotional tribute, she referred to her late husband as “my doer” and spoke of their profound love for one another.

treating

“How will I raise Skoni without you?” she wrote, referring to their child. She further narrated how Nkambule had embraced and cared for her daughters from a previous relationship, treating them as his own. “I cannot fill your void,” she stated, adding that her husband was “her spoiler”, a man who always made sure she and their children were well cared for.

On another note, as customary at memorial services, a sermon was delivered, this time by Pastor Denis Shongwe, who took the opportunity to remind the congregation of the importance of preparing for eternal life.
He noted that while many individuals take steps to ensure they are financially covered in case of death—through life insurance and similar means—spiritual preparation is often overlooked.
“What about the coverage for eternal life?” he posed to the mourners. He emphasised that in addition to securing material wealth and protection for their families, individuals should seek the ‘cover of the blood of Jesus’, ensuring they are spiritually prepared for the afterlife.

Unlike many memorials where mourners sing, dance, and sometimes weep openly, Nkambule’s farewell was marked by an unusually sombre atmosphere. The church was filled with mourners sitting in silence, listening intently as speakers recounted their memories of the businessman. Some individuals stood quietly outside, unable to find seating inside the packed venue, yet unwilling to leave before honouring Nkambule’s memory.

killing

This heavy mood was a stark reflection of the deep loss felt by Nkambule’s family, friends, and the wider community. His sudden and brutal killing has left many in disbelief, grappling with the reality that a man known for his kindness and generosity could meet such a violent end.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Times of Eswatini News reported that two alleged suspects in the killing of Nkambule and assaulting his brother were shot dead. The duo is said to have been found hitchhiking around Ezulwini.
