MBABANE – While the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) has reported a decrease in the overall murder rate, a disturbing trend is emerging: A significant rise in passion killings.

This alarming development poses a serious challenge to society, despite a 27 per cent drop in total murder cases.

According to the REPS annual performance report for 2024, 133 murder cases were recorded, compared to 183 in the same period last year. While this decline is noted, the report emphasises that: “It still continues to be a cause for concern as killing of one another is taboo”.

The report highlights the concerning rise of passion killings, stating: “Passion killings continue to be on the increase and pose a great challenge in society.” This trend is particularly worrying, as it suggests a breakdown in interpersonal relationships and a rise in violent conflict within intimate partnerships.

Despite the challenges, the REPS reported a 75 per cent detection rate for murder cases, demonstrating their commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice.

“However, breakthroughs have been made as a total of 137 suspects were arrested for the various murders committed,” the report stated.

The REPS has identified several contributing factors to these murders, including family disputes where domestic conflicts and unresolved family issues are frequently escalating into fatal violence.

Secondly, the police identified alcohol abuse. The report stated that intoxication is often a catalyst for violent behaviour, contributing to both domestic and other forms of murder.
