MBABANE - A wave of distressing sexual assault cases is sweeping across the land.

There is a particularly disturbing incident involving a primary school pupil who was repeatedly raped in a school toilet by a fellow schoolmate.

The incident has sparked outrage and calls for heightened safety measures within educational institutions. According to sources, the tranquillity of the primary school was shattered on February 27, when an eight-year-old pupil was violated within the confines of the school toilet.

The sexual assault, perpetrated by another pupil, left the young survivor traumatised, and the community reeling. This incident stands as a stark testament to the ever-present dangers that children face. This horrifying event is not an isolated one. In the preceding days, a series of other sexual assaults were reported, bringing the total to a disturbing five rape cases within the week. A woman at Nkoyoyo in Mbabane, was attacked by an unknown assailant near a roadside.

At Nsangwini, Pigg’s Peak, a woman was forced into sexual intercourse within the supposed safety of her own home. At Lusushwana, Matsapha, a woman endured a brutal sexual assault in a bush.

In Mankayane, a 19-year-old was forced into sexual intercourse inside a car. These reports, according to a parent who preferred anonymity, reveal a disturbing pattern of violence that demands immediate attention.

The matter was reported at Matsapha Police Station and is currently under investigation.

According to a legal expert, the rape of minors presents a grave and persistent crisis in Eswatini.

Data reveals alarmingly high rates of sexual violence against young girls, with many survivors experiencing abuse before reaching the age of 18.

Perpetrators are frequently individuals known to the survivors, including neighbours, acquaintances and even family members, underscoring the severe vulnerability of children within their own communities.

While Eswatini has enacted legislation like the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Act to combat this issue, challenges remain in ensuring effective enforcement and providing comprehensive support to survivors.

The profound physical and psychological trauma inflicted on these young survivors highlights the urgent need for continued efforts to protect children and hold perpetrators accountable.
