HLANE BUGANU FESTIVAL: BIGGER AND BETTER
HLANE - Bigger and better!
This is the common phrase echoed by many who arrived for the second leg of the Annual Buganu Festival. Yesterday, women from all over the country gathered at Hlane Royal Residence to commemorate the ceremony. Between February 21 and 23, members of Lutsango women’s Regiment had also arrived in large numbers to attend the event.
Festivities
Once again, the women returned yesterday to take part in the festivities. Notably, for the first time, there will be a public holiday on the Monday following the ceremony. During the Buganu Ceremony at Buhleni, His Majesty the King announced that a public holiday would now be commemorated alongside King Sobhuza Day.
Previously, King Sobhuza Day was celebrated on July 22. The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a legal notice officially proclaiming the holiday.
According to many women interviewed, this year’s attendance seems to have surpassed that of the previous year. Additionally, it was observed that a greater number of vendors had arrived, hoping to make sales. Tema, a vendor from KaBhudla, shared that she had come to sell some of the wares she had brought along, including bananas, which she said were selling well.
Attendees
Another vendor, Sithembile, who was selling boiled cassava (umjumbula), noted that not only were there many attendees, but the number of vendors had also increased. She attributed this to more people recognising the benefits of attending the festival, both for commerce and cultural participation.
